Size info and Tips
SAFETY.  All bird safe metals: chrome-plated steel (small) and stainless steel (large); no zinc plating.  See why 'no zinc' hardware is important.

COCKATOO OWNERS -- Toy hangers (photo) are MUCH safer than quick links!   You can also use the toy hanger in place of padlocks (no keys to worry about).  I use toy hangers, not quick links for my own cockatoo. -- Kit

1. SMALL SIZE Chewable Hangers and Toy Hangers - Stainless Steel
SIZE: Mid-sized and small birds with 1-inch or smaller bar spacing.  All stainless steel hardware.

Made in U.S.A.   Patent#54,474031

Made from a high quality (bird safe) stainless steel rod
(5/32 inch) and a screw-on acrylic ball.  Guaranteed by the manufacturer to be usable for one year, even with hyacinths macaws.

TOY HANGER.  A toy hanger (see photo) is a j-shaped metal rod that is threaded on the longer end.  The toy goes over the hook, the hook goes between the cage bars, and the ball is screwed onto the threaded end.  Ball is outside the cage.  The ball turns with the toy but doesn't unscrew.

CHEWABLE HANGER.  The chewable hanger (also called a skewer or kabob - see photo) is a straight rod with a loop at the bottom.  Place toy parts on the skewer, the skewer goes between the cage bars, and the ball is screwed onto the threaded end.  Ball is outside the cage.  The ball turns with the toy but doesn't unscrew.  Hanging Toy on Skewer.

TIPS for mechanically-inclined parrots.  Some birds can undo the ball on the top of the skewer (chewable hanger).  Simply add a large bead (larger than the cage bar spacing) between the cage and the screw-on ball.  Your bird won't be able to reach the ball to unfasten it.

Select the Right Size for your Bird

SIZE RECOMMENDATIONS:

  1. Select BALL SIZE based on cage bar spacing.
  • MEDIUM & SMALL BIRDS.
For 1 inch or smaller cage bar spacing - select SMALL BALL.
This size is recommended for mid sized birds (such as African greys, Amazons, eclectus, and small cockatoos) and small birds.
  • LARGE BIRDS.
For up to 1½ inch spacing between bars - select
    LARGE BALL.
Use this size for BIG BIRDS and very big birds -- large cockatoos and macaws.
  1. Select LENGTH of skewer based on how and where you will use the skewer.  Large ball size is 11 inch or 16½-inch length.  Small ball skewer is 11-inches long.
  • Any skewer can be "shortened" by adding beads on the skewer.  Add them at the bottom of the skewer (loop end) to raise the object on the skewer.  Add beads outside the cage (between the cage and the clear plastic screw-on ball) to shorten the amount of skewer in the cage.
NOTE: Beads used at the end of the skewer near the clear plastic screw-on ball need to be too large to fit through the cage bars.
  • Select the extra long (16½-inch) skewer for large macaws and cockatoos when you want more usable space on the skewer.

SPECIAL NOTES:  Adjustments -- Using a larger or smaller size.

TOY HANGER.  You may prefer the larger toy hanger in a smaller cage because the pieces are larger and easier to handle.  For example, if you're hanging a swing (such as a cotton rope spiral boing) in a small cage, it's easier to use a LARGE toy hanger (because it's larger and easier to hang on to).

CHEWABLE HANGER.  If you have different size birds and want to use the smaller skewer in a large cage, add a large bead (too large to go through the cage bars) on the outside of the cage before you screw the ball onto the rod.  It's easier to put vegetables on the smaller skewer (it's thinner).

HINT:  The large chewable hanger is about the size of a pencil.  It can break some harder vegetables like carrots.  To prevent breaking vegetables, make a holes in vegetables with a clean Phillips screw driver, and then place them on the skewer.

STORY/TIP: Rosie, the store bird (Goffin's cockatoo) grabs the loop at the end of the skewer and throws it out of the cage when she's finished with her vegetables.  She can actually throw it several feet!  She grabs the loop at the end of the skewer and throws it like a javelin.  To prevent this, thread a large bead on the skewer before putting the destructible items on the skewer.  It's too big to fit through the cage bars.
